Wiefelstede

NATURAL IDYLL

'State approved health spa', several times national winner in the competition 'Our village should become prettier': These awards say a lot about Wiefelstede already.

The unobtrusive beauty of the Geest is here still preserved in its genuine originality. Today wall hedges and over 800 ha forest form a charming landscape mosaic. Already our forefathers knew about the advantages of this countryside as pre-historic barrows from the Bronze Time show.

In the year 1057 the Christianisation started here in the Ammerland, when the church was sanctified by calling John the Baptist. In the 13th-century 8 farmsteads for 'Dat Kerspel to Wivelstede' are being mentioned.

Today its a bit more crowded in the 106 km2 large community: 18 farms with 14.500 souls group around the Ammerland's only scattered village.

The Ammerland-route runs on dreamy, bumpy clinker-brick roads along old farms and groomed gardens. Sunbeams are being caught in oak crowns, wall hedges protect from wind: many cyclists appreciate this natural idyll. As in the whole Ammerland the blooming rhododendrons' colour canon determines the seasonal highlight. A visit to the rhododendron park Gristede let you forget everyday life....

HOUSE Of WEDEL.
Please what is the curious task of a Düsselmeister, Schildträger or Stockleger? The result can be discovered in the Wiefelstede Local Museum 'Haus von Wedel' (little hint: it has to do with Klootschieten, some kind of curling).
