"VERGNÖGDE GOODHEIT" AS ATTITUDE TO LIFE

'Adewacht', first mentioned first in 1150 can best be described as 'Vergnögde Goodheit' (delightful goodness) - and nothing but just cheerfulness or kind-heartedness characterises the soft trait of the 15 villages in the southern Ammerland better.

Along the Ammerland-route you discover the reasons for this cheerful attitude to life: a constant change of moors and meadows, woods and fields gives one inner equilibrium. At the wayside old farmhouses persevere to be discovered, idyllic floodplains are ideal for a little stop and windmills want to be explored. Or just enjoy the magic sunset light at the coastal canal, which runs through the 113 km2 large community in the south.

The development of Edewecht received several backlashes through the Münster feuds in the Middle Ages. With the moor colonisation and the coastal canal development the community went steeply uphill. From the heavy destructions of the last war, of which the wooden belfry the Edewecht landmark also fell victim one can't feel a thing today: the 21.100-soul community gives again the feeling of happy rootedness - thus the 'Vergnögde Goodheit'.

HEINJE' SCHER DONJON
Fortified granaries, where farmers could save provisions and as local literature always states, citizens could take refuge there at the same time, were very much part of the Ammerland. Edewecht with its Heinje'schen donjon is one of the last witnesses of this architecture and one of Germany's biggest nobles firs can be admired as botanical feature.

MILLS
the three functional mills in Westerscheps and Edewecht bring you into the fascinating world of windmills. At the edge of the Auebach a 24 metres high smock mill and a smaller mill can be admired. In Edewecht's village centre stands a pump mill.
